Modules of Linguaskill

Reading & Listening

The Reading and Listening module evaluates a candidate's ability to understand written and spoken English in real-life academic and professional contexts. Using adaptive testing technology, the assessment automatically adjusts to the candidate's proficiency level, ensuring accurate and personalised results.

Writing

The Writing module assesses the ability to communicate effectively through written English. Candidates complete practical writing tasks ranging from emails and messages to more detailed responses, demonstrating clarity, organisation, vocabulary usage, and grammatical accuracy.

Speaking

The Speaking module evaluates spoken communication skills through a series of interactive tasks. Candidates respond to prompts, describe information, express opinions, and engage with workplace or academic scenarios, providing a comprehensive measure of spoken English proficiency.

Linguaskill Exam Pattern

Reading and Listening

  • The Reading and Listening module typically takes 60–85 minutes to complete.

  • There is no fixed number of questions in this section.

  • The test is adaptive and adjusts to the candidate’s proficiency level based on
    their responses.

  • The Reading section includes a variety of question types, such as gap-fill exercises and multiple-choice questions based on passages.

  • The Listening section includes both short and extended audio recordings.

  • Candidates are required to listen carefully and select the most appropriate answer from the options provided.

Writing

  • The Writing module is 45 minutes long and consists of two parts.
    • Part 1 – requires candidates to write an email based on a short prompt. The response should be at least 50 words.
    • Part 2 – presents a scenario that requires a longer written response.
  • For Linguaskill General, candidates are expected to write for a wider audience, with a minimum response length of 180 words.
  • For Linguaskill Business, candidates are required to write a professional communication, such as a letter or report addressed to a manager or workplace audience.

Speaking

  • The Speaking module has a duration of approximately 15 minutes.

  • It is designed to assess the candidate’s spoken English proficiency and consists of five parts.

  • Candidates take the Speaking test on a computer using a microphone and headphones.

  • All questions are displayed on the computer screen, and responses are recorded through the microphone.

    • Part 1 – Candidates answer eight personal questions about themselves.

    • Part 2 – Candidates are presented with eight sentences that they are required to read aloud.

    • Part 3 – Candidates speak on a given topic for one minute and are provided 40 seconds to prepare.

    • Part 4 – Candidates are shown a visual prompt, such as a chart or diagram, and are required to describe it for one minute. One minute is provided for preparation.

    • Part 5 – Candidates answer five questions related to a specific topic and are given 40 seconds to prepare before responding. 

Linguaskill General

The Linguaskill General Test is designed to assess English language used in everyday life. It is suitable for university admissions, student exchange programs, and professional requirements in non-business environments. The test includes topics related to daily communication, such as travel, technology, studying, work, and general social situations.

Technical Requirements for Linguaskill Test

Computer Requirements

  • Minimum 512 MB RAM.
  • Screen resolution of 1280 × 1024 or higher.
  • Internet bandwidth of at least 2 Mbps.
  • Supported operating systems:

    • Windows 7 or later

    • Chromebooks running Chrome OS 94 or later

    • Apple Mac devices running macOS 10.12.6 (Sierra) or later

  • Supported web browsers:
    • Google Chrome
    • Mozilla Firefox

  • Latest version of Adobe Reader installed.

  • Closed-back headphones that fully cover the ears.

  • A headset with an attached microphone. The microphone should be noise-cancelling for optimal audio quality.
